✦ Who shows up for the work ✦

The fans

film buffs, Greenlights readers, Longhorns, and the keep-livin crowd

We are not his staff and we do not speak for him — just people who like the movies, underlined half the memoir, and happen to share a state with him. Here is an honest portrait of the crowd, and a plain map for where to follow him for real.

A McConaughey fan is a surprisingly mixed thing to be. Some came for a single performance and stayed for the whole arc — a stoner named Wooderson, a lawyer, a cowboy with AIDS, a detective, an astronaut. Some have never seen Killer Joe but can recite half of Greenlights. Some just like that a burnt-orange Longhorns superfan from Uvalde turned into one of the more thoughtful voices about how to live.

We built this corner of the web the way fans do — out of liking the work, and to help the next person find their way in. Everything here is our own words and our own picks. What follows is a portrait, not a dossier.

The audience, roughly

Honest ballparks for the shape of the fandom — the kind of thing you'd say over a beer, not the output of a dashboard. Read them as impressions, not measurements.

Who shows up

A wide, Texas-rooted crowd

Part of the fun is how little the fans have in common besides him. A few of the groups we keep running into:

Film buffs & McConaissance watchers Greenlights readers Longhorns & UT folks Austin FC supporters Texans & Austin locals The wellness & fitness crowd Audiobook listeners People in a hard season

The film buffs argue about whether Mud or Dallas Buyers Club is the peak. The readers quote the traffic-light bit from the memoir. The Longhorns crowd knows him as the courtside regular and the professor who actually teaches at the Moody College. And a quiet slice of the fandom found him not through a movie at all, but through a motto that got them through something.

Frequently asked

For new fans

Is this the official Matthew McConaughey site?

No — this is an independent fan tribute, not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Matthew McConaughey. It is part of the WholeTech network of fan sites, built by fans for fans.

Where can I follow him officially?

On his own accounts, which we gather on our Social page. His Instagram is @officiallymcconaughey and his X handle is @McConaughey — those are his, not ours. Always confirm the account before you follow, since impersonators turn up.

Does he really live in Austin?

Yes. He was born in Uvalde, educated at the University of Texas in Austin, and lives in Austin with his family today — a genuine, long-standing local. More on the Austin and Texas story is woven through our Just Keep Livin page.

Where should a new fan start?

If you came for the movies, our Films page walks the arc from Wooderson to the Oscar. If you came for the words, start with Greenlights or just Ask Matthew a question and see what comes back.
